PALMA
THE Balearic government yesterday welcomed the Spanish armed forces's offer to help fight rising unemployment in the Balearics.
On Tuesday, the Brigadier General of the armed forces in the Balearics, Juan Carlos Domingo Guerra, said that the military offers “a credible alternative” to unemployment and yesterday, the Balearic government spokesperson, Employment Minister Joana Barcelo, backed Domingo's statement.

She said that people must not forget that the armed forces “offer excellent career prospects and training.” The armed forces are currently the biggest single employer in the Balearics, although there was a slight drop in recruits last year.
However, the Balearic government and military chiefs are confident that there will be a surge in recruits this year, during which unemployment is forecast to continue rising and job creation shrinking, once people have seriously considered what the armed forces have to offer.

Barcelo said that the government “completely agrees” with Domingo.
