On January 28, 1988, the Albufera wet lands on the outskirts of Alcudia, were declared a natural park but yesterday, Balearic environmental group GOB, said that the park is beginning to suffer because of government cut backs.

The Albufera natural park is considered by scientists, including Oxford University which holds regular field trips to the park, across Europe to be one of the most important wet lands in Europe and GOB is demanding that the Balearic government reviews its natural park plans.

Apparently, in 2010, the park had a budget of 12.1 million euros, this year, the government has slashed that figure by 50 percent and also significantly reduced the number of staff.

There are now only two people responsible for maintenance and safety and that is not enough, says GOB.
