A full investigation has been opened into a fatal motorcycle accident in Punta Ballena, Magalluf, which claimed the lives of a 54-year-old man late on Monday night.

According to Calvia Local Police sources, the entire accident was caught on the resort's CCTV video cameras and the accident happened at exactly 23.32hrs.

Apparently, the 54-year-old motorcyclist left a bar, mounted his motorcycle and drove some 200 metres in the wrong direction down Punta Ballena towards Plaza de Magalluf.

It appears that he failed to take the bend in the road properly and carried on straight, crashing into the sidewalk at, what police sources described yesterday “as a considerable speed.” The CCTV images show the motorcyclist being thrown some 20 metres along the road from his motorbike and his crash helmet, which did not appear to have been securely fastened, coming off.

The victim apparently suffered severe head injuries and when a neighbour discovered the victim just moments after the accident, the 54-year-old was in a critical condition, fighting for his life.

The neighbours immediately called the emergency services and the Local Police which dispatched various units to the scene.
061 paramedics attended the victim, who apparently lived in Alaro, at the scene but they battled in vain to reanimate him.
Members of Calvia Local Police spent most of the night going over footage captured by the CCTV cameras in the area and yesterday confirmed that the accident has been recorded on camera.

Police spent most of yesterday at the scene of the accident but at going to press last night, it remained unclear why the motorcyclist set off in the wrong direction.
