THE Balearic Lobby for the Defence of Animals (Baldea) held a protest march at midday yesterday running between Plaza Mayor and the Plaza Marqués in Palma to denounce the killing of a pet husky at the hands of its owner.

The 20-year-old culprit apparently tied the dog to a boxing exercise punch bag and proceeded to stab it more than 10 times. The six-month-old animal died from loss of blood. Baldea wants Balearic society at large to demand that not only those who abandon and ill-treat their pets or livestock be brought to justice but that extreme acts of violence, such as the case of the husky, should be met with severe penalties. The Defence group cited the unsuitability of the young man to have had a pet, or any other living being, in his charge in the first place given that he is of such a violent nature.
