Palma.—Professional social project workers from Hull city in Britain are helping the Palma suburb of Son Gotleu restore its community relations after serious race riots last year.

The accidental death of Nigerian Efosa Okosun triggered confrontation with police and highlighted major divisions between national and immigrant communities.

Palma City Council is collaborating with the group from Hull in what is essentially a pilot project to help keep the fabric of Son Gotleu society together.

Last Thursday, councillors from the Social Welfare and Immigration departments welcomed the professionals from the Comenius Regio programme in Hull. Based on the success that the community project has had in Hull, Local Police and Social Services will be working in the schools in Son Gotleu to nurture racial harmony and promote academic achievement. The methods used in Hull will be adapted to use in Son Gotleu.
