Demonstrations for the right to work taking place today

THE United Left political party (EU) in the Balearics has issued a statement warning of Union strikes today across all the islands in protest at what it terms the “destruction” of jobs.

The EU party said that the demonstrations will be held under banners reading: “For the right to work, (and) workers unite against the destruction of the means of production; stop using the economic crisis as an excuse.” The party claims that “the dignity of human beings is rooted in the right to be gainfully employed.” The protest marches, say EU, are in response to action taken by a number of companies in the region who are closing down their operations with resultant job losses running into hundreds. It is not just the construction industry that is choosing this policy, said EU yesterday, but also other industrial sectors and the airlines.
