STAFF REPORTER GUARDIA Civil officers investigating the case of a 41-year-old Moroccan who went on the rampage on Wednesday in Sant Antoni on Ibiza, said yesterday that his random attack and injuring of at least 11 people with a machete and wooden club could have been triggered by his allegedly being caught shoplifting in a local supermarket.

Legal resident Mohamed E.B. was known to have had economic problems and was currently facing an eviction. He was a familiar figure in the neighbourhood of Sant Antoni as he had previously managed a bar.

But he was also known to have had a police record for drug trafficking and domestic violence.
Although some of the Moroccan's victims remained in Intensive Care Units in Can Misses hospital yesterday, all are expected to survive.
