Palma.—Palmanova Guardia Civil have mounted an investigation into a break-in at the jewelers along the sea front in Peguera in the early hours of yesterday morning.

According to the police, 180'000 euros worth of jewels were stolen. According to sources close to the investigation, the thieves used a large pair of metal cutters to break through the protective shutters and then smashed in the door and various windows, failing to set the alarm off.

Some of the valuable items were stolen from inside the store, others simply grabbed from the window display.
The exact time of the robbery has yet to be confirmed and the police are investigating whether the alarm system, was not working or was not activated.
Due to the alarm's apparent malfunction, it was not until 9am that the break in was reported by local residents.
House to house inquiries are being carried out.
