Palma.—The Director general for Traffic has just drawn up a new white paper and if approved will permit cyclists to ride on pavements which are more than three metres wide, providing they leave a distance of a metre between themselves and the buildings. At the moment, cyclists are banned from using the pavements but in some cities such as Palma where the network of cycle lanes is far from adequate, some cyclists find themselves with no option but to mount the pavement or join the busy traffic.

Another new proposal in the white paper is that the use of cycle helmets is going to be compulsory in cities.
However, while Palma City Council approves of the white paper in general, the City Councillor for Transport does not agree with making the use of helmets compulsory.
