Palma.—Local teacher union leader said yesterday that some 3'600 teachers, about 40 percent of the total workforce in the Balearics, backed yesterday's strike action and failed to turn up for work as part of a protest against the government's cuts to the local education service.

The demonstration was also backed by a number of parents, equally concerned about the damage the government is doing to their children's education.
Outside the Ministry for Education about 500 teachers and parents staged a protest where a statement was read out condemning the governments for its cuts to education which has put schools, teachers and the students under added pressure.
