STAFF REPORTER THE ex Majorcan Unionist (UM) party leader in Calvia, Maria Jose Rodriguez, said yesterday that she won't be standing as a candidate for the local Mayorship at the head of the new Convergencia per les Illes (CxI) party.

The CxI party has been launched by the ex UM President in the wake of a series of corruption scandals that undermined the credibility of the Majorcan Unionists.

Right from the outset, Rodriguez had refused to sign up to CxI, the new political face of the UM, but left the door open for standing as an Independent candidate in the local elections which are due to take place on 22nd May, suggesting she may see fit to pact with CxI.

However, Miguel Pacheco, who has set himself up as the CxI candidate for the Mayorship of Calvia in Rodriguez' stead, said yesterday that there would be no room for Independents. “All of us have to be CxI militants,” he insisted.
