NEWS DESK MOVES are afoot to convert Capdepera into an all-year-round quality tourist destination. Efforts, however, will concentrate on cultural tourism as opposed to an image of sun, sea and sand. Using subsidies provided by the regional Ministry for Employment, the local town council has contracted 18 people who were previously without work to launch a series of projects of social and general interest. Those involved in the development programme include administration staff, labourers and skilled craftsmen, library and museum attendants, and a technical consultant. Part of the challenge facing the team will be to persuade tourists of the natural resources that the municipality offers in terms of history, culture, and leisure. Also in the making is a web site where locals and visitors alike can log on to “what's on” in the area, and view cultural agendas on-line. A major sucess has been the publication of a monthly guide entitled “A Winter in Capdepera” which lists events, markets, fairs, places of tourist interest, and services.
