THE Llevant and Migjorn areas of Majorca, mostly made up of municipalities with tourist resorts, had the highest rates of unemployment last year, government figures showed yesterday.

Between 9 and 13 percent of the working population were without work in these districts whilst by way of contrast, the same sources showed that the numbers of jobless in the Tramuntana mountains stood at between just 3 and 6 percent of the working population. Only in the municipalities of Ariany and Escorca was unemployment registered at less than 3 percent.

It was the coastal resorts where losses suffered by hotels, restaurants, and other complementary tourist businesses which were hardest hit in terms of job losses, reported the National Institute of Statistics and the National Employment watchdog (SPEE).
