BALEARIC hoteliers are hosting a National Tourist Company Responsibility Congress in Palma . The event was opened yesterday by regional President Francesc Antich and Central Government's Minister for the President's Office, Ramon Jauregui.

The conference, which organisers have entitled “From the global to the local” has several aims. The first is to promote environmental protection as the best means of ensuring a quality tourist offer, and thereby higher competitivity.

It also intends to nurture corporate responsibility amongst hoteliers and tourist businesses, and to debate the means by which a future generation can ensure that such activity remains sustainable. In the Islands, there are 167 companies which measure up to the standards imposed by a quality audit on social and corporate responsibility.

Amongst them are the large hotel chains which have global networks and which understand that quality of supply is the best means to ensure business success. Director of the Social and Corporate Responsibility programme in the Balearics, Maria Duran, said that the Balearics has become a “testing ground” for quality development.
