PALMA
THE Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo, yesterday denied that the proposed tram link between the centre of Palma, the airport and Arenal, will cause traffic chaos in the heart of the capital.

Calvo has come under sustained criticism from the opposition centre right Partido Popular since the city council unveiled a basic plan for phase one of the tram project last week.

The council plans to route the tram down the Avenidas, while keeping traffic flowing in both directions, and also lay a cycle track along the same route. The PP claim that the net result will be traffic chaos and that Calvo should decide to either have the tram or the cycle lane running along the Avenidas. Calvo claims that as work on the tram will not start until 2011, there is plenty of time to get perfect the final tram plan and redesign Palma's traffic system if necessary.
