ROBERT Winsor's celebrity golf tournament got into full swing yesterday with the main tournament played at the Real Golf de Bendinat.
The two-day event got underway on Monday night with the welcome dinner and silent auction, organised by Malcolm Andrews, at the club house followed by a Texas Scramble golf tournament on Tuesday. Yesterday Winsor's field of top British celebrities took to the course for the main event before last night's gala dinner, cabaret and charity auction at the Santa Ponsa Country Club. Winsor, whose charity website is one of the most popular sites on Yahoo and Google, is hoping to break last year's fund raising record of 156'765 euros. At the end of last week he said that 100'000 euros had already been raised before a golf ball had been hit. Yesterday playing were the likes of Jasper Carrott, Jess Conrad, Norman Hunter, Big Ron Atkinson, Joe Goodman, Rocky Taylor, Brian Close, Mike England, Karl Howman, John Miles, Johnny Moore, Lance Percival, Peter Stringfellow and the father of top Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia, Victor Garcia. Last night's charity auction included a vast range of items from signed sporting memorabilia to a week's holiday for four people in Hawaii, Orlando and Tenerife, a motor yacht day out cruising round Pollensa and Formentor and dinner for four people at one of Peter Stringfellow's clubs in London, Paris or Dublin with all of the money raised going to disabled and under privileged children in Majorca. Winsor, who was awarded the MBE last year for his services to charity over the past 25 years, claims that this will be his final celebrity charity golf event.
However, he says he has been saying that since his first event in Majorca seven years ago.
