THE Leader of the Balearic Government, Jaume Matas, and the President of Gesa-Endesa (electricity and gas company) Manuel Pizarro, yesterday officially opened the new electric turbine system at the Son Reus power plant. This new addition to the plant will guarantee that there will be no power cuts in Majorca or Minorca this year, not even during the summer, said a spokesperson from Gesa-Endesa. The President of Endesa, Pizarro, said that this new turbine, which cost 200 million euros, will guarantee the future of the island's energy needs until the gaspipe and the electrical cable have been installed. The gaspipe and electrical cable are two of the most important projects that this legislation has ever carried out, said Matas. They are vital for the future of the Balearic Islands, he added, and without them the island's growth and progression would be threatened. Energy needs have increased by 27.5 percent in the last five years and in the future are expected to increase between 4 and 6 percent annually.
