THERE will be no blue flag flying at Formentor beach this year, despite the fact that it is one of the most idyllic spots for sunbathers and swimmers in the north of the island, the Association for Environmental Education (AEDAC) said yesterday.

Sources at Pollensa town hall said that the decision did not in fact have anything to do with local council complaints about quality but rather to do with some irregulaties which have arisen in connection with a small expansion programme being undertaken by the company responsible for the beach management at Formentor. The Environment department, on the contrary, said that Formentor does indeed have all the prerequisites necessary for the award of a blue flag - high water cleanliness, special adapted vehicles enabling the handicapped to enter the water, toilets, etcetera.

It is apparently not the first time that Formentor has been left without a blue flag. It was not flying in 2003 due to construction works along the seafront but the flag returned again the following year.

However, Pollensa has other super beaches where the blue flag will be flying this year - Cala Barques, Cala Molins and Tamarells beach.
The municipality of Manacor has eight beaches where there are blue flags this year.
