THE economist Onofre Martorell said yesterday that “there is no alternative” to sun and sea tourism is the Balearics, but estimated that “it needs retouching” to attract a “higher quality” visitor and “to prolong the season”, which will require a “recovery” of obsolete places which still exist. Martorell was giving a press conference to present the 20th Annual Congress of the European Association of Company Direction and Economy which will take place in Palma from June 5 to 7, when he made his remarks about the Balearic tourist situation, which he denied was in decline. This expert said that he was “very concerned” about the proliferation of “all inclusive” deals, although he added that it does encourage hotel tourism rather than residential which “does not generate employment”. The “all inclusive” deals could “do a lot of damage” to the tourism sector and if they stop it will “cause a decline” in tourism and hotel prices will fall, explained Martorell.
