THE approaching Sant Joan festival in Ciutadella on Minorca will involve mobilising some hundred local and national police officers.
In the most crowded moments of the Caragol des Born and the Jocs des Pla, there will be 48 officers on duty on each shift.
These upgraded security measures, which include participation by civil defence volunteers, will be operational between 23 and 26 June.
According to local government deputy, Antonia Salord, municipal police will organise shifts of between 20 and 32 officers according to the demands of the fiesta. The National police force is to make 16 of its officers available for duty at the central events of Sant Joan, which includes an equestrian spectacular. She reported that the Town Council had offered to pay for the extra hours worked by half the extra numbers of officers, in order to help meet budget restrictions.
