NATIONAL Police are investigating the death of 72-year-old German businessman Dieter Frerichs after his arrest at his home in Calanova yesterday morning.

Accused of fraud allegedly running to millions of euros in May this year, a court in Palma ordered the arrest of Frerichs. Officers from the National Police Fraud Squad went to his home in Calle Margarita Refuerzo at about 11.30am.

Understanding he was being arrested, Frerichs took flight and ran outside onto rocks in front of his property which overlooked the sea. He reportedly snatched a hand gun and leapt with it into the water.

According to the Police, Frerichs then repeatedly fired the gun into the air. Although it at first failed to fire, there was eventually one successful shot, Frerichs then pointed the revolver at his head and fired again.

The same officers who had come to arrest the German, then jumped into the water to retrieve him whilst another alerted the Emergency services.
Paramedics arrived and treated the victim on the spot. Due to the rocky terrain, an air sea rescue helicopter was called to the scene and Frerichs was taken to Son Dureta where he died some hours later.

Frerichs was the stepfather of ex model Fiona Ferrer, who distraught at the news of his death, reportedly accused the Police of having killed him.
