THE annual summer police operation is in full swing across the Balearics but security has been significantly stepped up over the past few days as the summer season starts to near its peak. The National Police and the Guardia Civil are carrying out road side spot checks while, over the weekend, there was a noticeable increase in police at the airport, ferry terminal in Palma and the yacht clubs. The summer security operation is primarily designed to secure the safety of the millions of tourists which come to the island each year while also cracking down on organised crime and drugs trafficking.
