Palma.—Josep Juan Cardona was also fined 2.2 million euros after having been found guilty by the Balearic High Court of forgery, misappropriation of public funds, bribery, falsifying documents and administrational fraud.

Cardona is the first ministers to have served under Juame Matas, who himself is facing numerous charges of alleged corruption, to have been found guilty and sentenced for corruption and the sentence is the highest to have been handed down to a Balearic politician to date.

Cardona, leader of the Partido Popular in Ibiza, served on the government from 2003 to 2007. A number of other people were also sentenced to a total of nearly 42 years yesterday for their role in Operation Scala which the judge claims was controlled by Cardona and involved around five million euros.
