THE environmental group GOB yesterday lamented the decision by the governing parties on Palma council not to suspend the project for the development of Ses Fontanelles.

According to GOB and the Nature Defence Group, the start of work could cause “irreversible damage to this wetland space”. The execution of the work will affect a part of the pine grove in Ses Fontanelles and a part of the wetland area.

The ecologists warned that the construction of a 25 metre wide road and a commercial centre, amongst other things, will affect an existing part of the wetlands area, which “will cause its physical destruction, including the destruction of its vegetation”. “This activity”, added GOB, “could cause damage to the ecosystem of the wetlands area and this could be a crime under article 325 of the Penal Code”, they warned.
