Majorca.— Riders Tony Marshall from Basingstoke, John Chilvers and his son Joseph Chilvers and Blaine Phelps from Wales, cycled 800km and 8000m of mountain climbs from Santander to Burgos then to Soria, Calatayud and Teruel before reaching their final destination in Valencia in just six days.

This was not the first time the friends got together to raise money for a charity but this time the idea came up after John's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last Spring. “I think we were sitting on the beach when we thought about doing something like this. “We climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest in these last few days but with the help of our families, friends and our sponsors, Euroline and Sportsman Bar in Cala Millor ( when they arrived on Sunday 28 July to be cheered on by their loved ones) we managed to raise over 3'000 pounds so far for a good cause,” said Tony. “It was a beautiful ride but tough. We were riding on average 150km every day and the temperatures in Northern Spain reached 40 degrees at some point. “We all lost quite a few kilos but it was a good diet,” he joked adding that the group is hoping to raise more funds once they get back to the UK.
The group of friends now relaxing in Majorca after their mammoth cycle said that apart from a punctured tyre there were no major issues during the six day ride mostly thanks to Brad Marshall and Cashel Chilvers, sons of two of the riders, who made the journey with the group in the support vehicle. “Actually the only major incident happened once we were on the island. We went out for a short ride but at the bottom of a hill, Blaine took a big tumble on his bike and he ended up in hospital for two days. Luckily he is now recovered after receiving a few stitches to the head and grazes on his arms “We come to Majorca quite often mostly in Spring but we are planning to come back later this year. We cycle regularly here but just socially. “Majorca is perfect for cycling.” Tony added that anyone interested in donating for their cause and Cancer Research UK could do so via http://www.justgiving.com/Tony-Marshall2013 or by texting guys99 then amount to 004470070 or 70070 from a UK mobile.
