THE astronomical observatory and planetarium at Costitx yesterday unveiled an exact replica of the Apollo XI lunar module which landed on the moon in 1969.
The official opening was attended by, amongst others, the President of the Sa Nostra banking group, Fernando Alzamora, the Director of the observatory, Salvador Sanchez and renowned engineer, Andreu Ripoll.
The replica of the module is the only one of its kind in the country which has been created using recycled material. As of next month, the public will be allowed to make use of a simulator which reproduces the event of the Apollo XI's landing on the moon.
A special dome structure imported from Holland provides access to the lunar module exhibition and protects it from the elements.
The project has taken a year and half to complete and has been financed by the Sa Nostra Foundation.
