STAFF REPORTER WITHIN a year, supermarket-style plastic bags are going to start disappearing from shops and stores as part of a National Waste Management plan linked to climate change control.

A 50 percent reduction in the amount of flimsy bags designed for one-off use is forecast along with their progressive substitution by biodegradable ones. And in 2010, a timetable will be set up for the throwaway variety to disappear altogether.

Nevertheless, Climate Change Director for the Balearic government, Magdalena Estrany said yesterday that as 250 million disposable plastic bags are used every year in the Islands, a more specific agenda has to be set. “We've got to agree on what needs to be done, and when, to get rid of those 2'500 tonnes of plastic,” she said. “The less bags we have, the better off we'll be.” Estrany said that if we shop with reusable bags, we could “save” six bags a week, 24 bags a month for every person, and 288 bags a year.
