More flexible shop opening hours led to a 13 percent increase in sales in the Balearics between January and August helping to lift some of the gloom on the High Street.
The higher sales will be a slap in the face for some shopowners who have always opposed flexible opening hours and have resisted any moves by the local authorities to introduce Sunday opening.
Tourists generated a sizeable part of the higher sales. Shops started opening in Palma on a Sunday two years ago and the move has proved successful. But still some of the smaller shops elect to stay closed claiming that the higher staff costs will not compensate for any increase in sales.
