MAJORCA'S small to medium-sized business federation, Pimem, said yesterday that although it recognised the rights of workers to hold a general strike next Wednesday, Pimem members will not be supporting it and claimed their own right to open during the industrial action.

A federation spokesman said: “However, we don't believe that the austerity measures and labour reforms which have been introduced by the Spanish government are going to solve the economic crisis.” Pimem is not alone in its rejection of the general strike. Members of the doctors' union in the Balearics (Simebal), nursing union (SATSE) and teachers' union (ANPE) have all said they are not going to join the protest on 29th September.

Amongst those who are backing the industrial action will be the Balearic association of the self-employed (APTA), the Police union (SUP) and the Guardia Civil association (AUGC). Civil servants and other government workers are also lending their support. The General Workers Union and the Workers Commission have meanwhile been holding workers' rallies amongst hostelry and commerce staff to encourage backing for the strike.
