Ibiza.—According to sources close to the investigation into the blaze which destroyed 115 hectares of woodland and threatened a residential area, a man was arrested on Monday afternoon and is being held at Guardia Civil headquarters in Ibiza town.

The forest fire which broke out on Sunday evening at Cala Llonga was declared yesterday by the Interior Ministry as being totally under control, resulting in the high level risk of “Grade 2” being reduced to “0”.

The Emergency Department has now given over the responsibility of keeping a watch on the burned land to the Balearic Nature Protection Institute (Ibanat) just to make sure that there are no “flare-ups” and to continue the work of complete extinction.

Hence, the reserve military units which had been brought in from outside the island to cope with the emergency have returned to the mainland and Ibiza is now continuing to monitor the situation with its own fire services and environmental technicians.

However, at its height, the fire had forced the Emergency Services to evacuate around 1'000 people from a residental complex. Nearly everyone has been able to return to their properties.
