PALMA
BARRING any last-minute changes, Palma's new women's prison will open its doors in October with room for 350 inmates.
The facilities will be split into two main sections - individual cells for mothers who will remain there with very young children, and a separate area for individual internees in an open communal area.

Prison director Manuel Aviles said yesterday that the final details for the opening of the centre are being finalised. New arrangements will mean that mothers will have an improved quality time with their offspring in facilities which offer more privacy. He confirmed that there is a total of 30 places for mothers and “around” 300 for inmates in the open section of the prison.
