THE President of the Partido Popular (PP) in Calvia, Manuel Onieva, confirmed yesterday that the party will be holding a first round of primaries to select their candidate for the post of Mayor in May's regional elections.

Nearly a year ago, in front of an audience of 1'150 party members, Onieva had declared himself the “provisional” candidate for the PP bid for the mayorship. However, he has now said that the candidate will be selected through the primary selection process.

Yesterday's confirmation from Onieva was officially conveyed to Balearic Partido Popular headquarters in Palma but he had told local party members of his intentions some weeks ago, said Teresa Martorell, Mayor's deputy in Calvia.

However, Onieva, known as the “successor” to outgoing PP Mayor Carlos Delgado won't go uncontested as Martorell herself has already made it known that she also wants to run for the job.

Delgado had clashed with Balearic PP leader Jose Ramon Bauza over the fact that he (Delgado) had wanted to nominate Onieva as his successor without going through the election process.
