PALMA THE Ponent motorway already needs a third lane to absorb the heavy traffic it attracts, even though the latest stretch, from Palmanova to Paguera, has only just been opened.

Figures from the Roads Department (from 2000) show that the motorway, which has two lanes in each direction, needs another lane in each direction to cope with the traffic using it. The motorway is already coping with 74'430 vehicles a day at Cas Catala, the point where it leaves Palma, according to statistics for 2006.

The traffic has increased considerably, taking into account that in 2005, 71'454 vehicles used this exit every day.
Going back to the year 2000, 69'688 vehicles used the road daily.
The figures are similar for other exits on the road, such as Puerto Portals.
In 2006 the daily average number of vehicles using the road in this area was 75'592. In 2000 it was 67'570. In six years, the daily amount of traffic at this point has increased by 8'000 vehicles.

The new stretch of the motorway from Palmanova to Paguera, going past the Cala Figuera water treatment plant, is used by 44'524 vehicles per day. These figures are for 2006.

From 2005 to 2006 there was an increase of nearly 800 vehicles per day. And it is estimated that traffic will increase considerably in the near future.
The construction of a third lane on this motorway is one of the projects which is mentioned in the roads agreement recently approved by the Spanish Cabinet and whose execution will be managed by the Council of Majorca.

This project will be done in addition to the project to widen the Llucmajor motorway by adding a third lane, from the airport to the Cala Blava exit, where the traffic is also intense.
