A 29-year-old Moroccan, Mimoun D., has been arrested on charges of holding a cousin of his against her will on two occasions at a house in Campanet, the Guardia Civil in Sa Pobla said yesterday.

During both kidnaps, sources close to the investigation reported, the suspect is alleged to have attempted to abuse his cousin sexually on repeated occasions.

The second kidnap was only discovered when the family of the cousin came forward and explained to the Guardia Civil that it was not the first time that the girl had gone missing. The accused had apparently also kidnapped her in August this year but the family had been afraid to report the incident.

The cousin, after her release on Saturday, said that on 4th August last, Mimoun D. had tricked her into going to his house in Campanet. It would seem that he was very attracted to her but she did not return his feelings. When she tried to leave, he prevented her and locked her in the house.

She was reportedly held for 10 days against her will and was submitted to repeated threats. Mimoun D. had wanted to frighten her, she said, into not trying to escape. Eventually on 14th August, a sister of the young woman discovered that she had been kidnapped and was being held at the house in Campanet.

Together with other members of the family, the sister came to the property and rescued the victim.
A joint decision was made not to go to the Guardia Civil and report what Mimoun D. had done because the family was afraid of “breaking ranks.” But having kept quiet about the kidnap on the first occasion, the family did not keep their silence over the second incident which took place on 25th September.
