Palma.—The Newsnight feature on North Korea won the award at the News and Documentary Emmy ceremony which was held in New York on Monday night but sadly, Majorcan resident Lloyd-Roberts was unable to attend the ceremony because she is currently on assignment in the Middle east.

The report Inside the North Korean Bubble, which also appeared on BBC World News America, involved reporter Sue Lloyd-Roberts and cameraman Tony Joliffe gaining rare access to the closed country.

While taking the “model tour”, the pair were able to offer an insight into everyday life.
Their feature won the category of Outstanding Feature Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast.
Peter Horrocks, BBC Global News director, said the award was a tribute to the talent and ambition of journalists across the BBC.
High quality features
Steve Mitchell, head of programmes at BBC News, referred to the Emmy success as “a real feather in Newsnight's cap”.
He added: “One of Newsnight's attributes is it can provide the space and time for the creation of such powerful and high quality features and it has been doing that for the last 30 years.” Speaking to the Bulletin by phone from the Middle East yesterday, Lloyd-Roberts said that she was “over the moon” about winning her first American award to add to the scores of British accolades she has won during her career to date.

But, it was hard work, to say the least. “North Korea is like living in the 18th century. “The poverty is terrible and all of the money is spent on the country's military arsenal. “On arrival, the first thing the authorities do at the airport is confiscate your mobile telephone and it was extremely difficult to tell the true story, virtually impossible at times because we were constantly accompanied by minders,” Sue Lloyd-Roberts revealed. “But, all the hard work was worth it because Monday was a great night for the BBC,” she added.
Four nominations
BBC World News America received four Emmy nominations this year, including those for reports on the Haiti earthquake, Kabul's street children and last year's floods in Pakistan.
