STAFF REPORTER SOMETHING that was once just an idea, may shortly become a reality. The Balearic government is preparing a case to put before UNESCO for Majorca's Serra Tramuntana mountain range to be recognised as an Environmental Heritage Site..

Regional Minister Angel Grimalt said yesterday that preparing paperwork to be submitted to Unesco for Environmental Heritage recognition is completely independent from and considerably less complicated than making a claim for the mountains to be a “World Heritage Site.” Grimalt said that although the latter may in theory be possible, he was aware that the Unesco Committee was currently focusing on “other areas of the world” for such an award.
