STAFF REPORTER ALCUDIA Town Council has collected 1'300 signatures in protest against the planned construction of the Sa Pobla to Alcudia rail extension via the so-called “northern route,” said Miquel Ferrer, the local Mayor yesterday.

Ferrer explained that yesterday was the final day for objections to be presented to regional government against the plans which aim to build the track running parallel to the Palma to Alcudia road. Following fierce opposition by the local council to the northern route, the Transport ministry had already said that the extension would not be built during the the Balearic government's present term of office.

Ferrer said that just because there had been mass protest against the use of the ministry's preferred northern route didn't mean that people in Alcudia objected to the train at any cost. On the contrary he said, around 85 percent of the 1'300 signatories said that they welcomed the train but via the alternative “southern route” which passes by the s'Albufera nature reserve. Bearing in mind, claimed Ferrer, that the population of Alcudia amounts to some 20'000 people, the cross section of views of the collected signatories is a major reference point for how local people feel about the railway extension.
