Palma.—Seven out of ten retailers in Majorca, 68 percent, claim that trade during September was worse than last year and in fact, the worst September since the start of the recession.

According to the results of the survey carried out by the retail association Pimeco, only three percent of the island's traders witnessed an increase in trade while 29 percent claim that takings were about the same.

The biggest problem for the clothing and footwear sectors has been the weather. The Autumn/Winter ranges have been on sale since the summer sales drew to a close at the end of August but with temperatures continuing to remain high and the conditions dry, there is hardly any demand yet for winter clothes and accessories.

And, it is not just in Palma where traders are complaining. In the capital, 67 percent of the retail sector suffered a decline in takings compared to September last year but outside of the city, in non-metropolitan areas, that figure was higher at 70 percent.

The retail survey also revealed that August was a rather poor month for high street trade as well.
Apparently, compared to August last year, only 11 percent of the sector enjoyed a rise in income. 21 percent claimed that trade was more or less the same as last year while 68 percent suffered a down turn in takings.

Pimeco sources said the combination of the long summer and low consumer confidence is continuing to hit the retail sector.
