Palma.—A forest fire in the woods on the luxury Son Vida estate caused alarm yesterday afternoon.

The dense pine forest which covers the mountains surrounding the exclusive multi-million euro properties and luxury hotels is not easy to access and while fire fighters did try and battle the blaze on the ground, air power was vital in getting the fire under control and eventually extinguishing it before it could spread.

Golfers out on the course were caught by surprise by the fire, in particular the fire fighting helicopters refueling their water bags from the water holes along the course. The alarm was raised at midday and by 4pm, the fire declared under control although not totally extinguished.

Source for the Ibanat forestry commission said that an estimated 3'200 square metres of woodland had been destroyed by the fire.
