PALMA
THE Golden Globe-winning Irish actor Colm Meaney and leading Italian screen star and former Bond girl Maria Grazia Cucinotta helped launch the International Mallorca Film Festival at the World Travel Market in London yesterday.

Cucinotta, who starred as the Cigar Girl in the Bond film The World Is Not Enough, accompanied Meaney, who spends at much time as possible at his Soller home and the Director of the Festival, the Majorca-based Catalan film maker David Carreras, at yesterday's headline event on the Balearic stand at the tourism trade fair at the Excel exhibition centre.

The MAIFF festival, the first major international event of its kind to be organised and held in Majorca, was first presented to the local and Spanish media in Palma last month but yesterday was the global unveiling of the event which is going to take place in April 2011.

Between then and now, the festival is also going to be promoted at the forthcoming Berlin, Sundance, Shanghai, Tokyo, Venice, Toronto and Cannes film festivals as well as other international travel fairs.

The MAIFF will have a prestigious international jury of actors, film makers and producers and include a variety of different competition categories including best performances, documentaries, short films, script and professional career.

A host of top international stars are also going to be attending and gracing the red carpet of the festival which will feature productions in and out of competition in Majorca being screened.
