Palma.—A number of community-minded people living in Palma have joined forces to try and improve the environment in which they live.
The scheme they want to introduce, already christened Agenda Ciudadana de Palma (AC21) is based on municipal self help groups active in other districts such as “Agenda 21” in Calvia.

The new group said yesterday that the more people who participate in the group the more successful it will be. A spokesman explained that the first step will be to establish a list of priorities to improve the social and environmental quality of the municipality.

Another such group of citizens operating in Estellencs works independently of the council, lobbying support, producing its own documents and finally presenting proposals to local authorities for action.

The most recently formed group in Palma is initially going to hold seven fortnightly meetings at Espacio de Cultura Can Alcover (c/Sant Alonso, 24, Palma). Each meeting will deal with different themes: social welfare, the environment, the economy and other local concerns.
