THE Balearic government has been shown to have used the Internet to great advantage with its tourist website www.illesbalears.es having received a total of 85'168'261 enquiries during the first nine months of the year.

The figures, confirmed the regional Ministry, show that the interest in tourism in the Balearics Islands has increased cumulatively by 27 percent in respect of the previous year.

Other significant data from the report revealed that by May this year, there were more than 10 million “hits” on the website - a month earlier than in 2007 and that during the annual tourist season - between April and September this year, there had been 23 percent more enquiries (12 million) more than last year. The Ministry asserts that the results speak for themselves in so much as the enquiries are evidence of the high level of interest shown in the Islands as a holiday destination. It is also a reflection, a spokesman said of the fact that the Ministry has accepted the Internet, and other state-of-the-art technology as a key tool of enquiry and reservation for clients.
