20 months ago the Gaurdia Civil began probing the activities of alleged Russian Mafia boss Alexander Romanov who was arrested yesterday.

Palma.—Europol, which has been coordinating the investigation into Romanov and his Russian Moscow-based criminal organisation known as “Taganskaya”,  gave the order for some 100 members of the Guardia Civil, many of them heavily armed and wearing body armour,  and other police officers to swoop yesterday morning and a series of simultaneous raids were carried out on seven properties in Palma, Inca and Pegeura.
Operation Dirieba began at 9am and continued throughout the day as the Guardia Civil arrested the eight people, including the alleged Mafia boss Romanov, who has a long criminal record in Russia, and have confiscated boxes of evidence.
