Palma.—The Director of Palma Airport, Jose Antonio Alvarez, said yesterday that this summer, Son San Joan will handle a record number of passengers, despite a slow first three months of the year.
But, new record numbers were recorded in April, May and June while, once collated, July is also expected to have witnessed a sharp increase in passengers with August and September forecast to post further growth making this summer “the best in the history of the airport,” Alvarez said.
The Balearic Minister for Tourism, Jaime Martinez, accompanied the Director on a tour of the airport and  underlined the fact that on the back on consecutive growth in passengers figures in 2012 and 2013, the market is going to consolidate this year with another increase in passenger traffic.“And, we’re not just talking about peak season, we are now starting to see more movement in the mid to high season. Last year, passengers figures from March to November were the best for the past six years.” Martinez also said that a significant improvement in the domestic market is being witnessed this summer but it is still the British, German and Spanish markets which account for 78 percent of passengers through Palma airport.
