Palma.—Palma yesterday unveiled  a new project to transform the city into a sporting capital from next year.
Pedro Homar, the Director of the Palma 365 Foundation, presented the new initiative “Passion for running” at the World Travel Market, a project which has the backing of the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry, German Kathrine Switzer, who has agreed to be the ambassador of the project.
During the presentation Homar explained that sport has become an integral part of tourism and one that the 365 Foundation strongly believes can help prolong the season in the city.
Homar said that the principal aim is to transform Palma into one of the sporting capitals of Europe and in order to do that, next year a number of major international events are going to be held in the capital. Homar underlined the fact that other cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, London, Marseilles, Barcelona have all moved into this market, as have other destinations which have opted for more extreme sports such as the Ultra Trial du Mont Blanc, and he is convinced Palma can fit nicely into this growing market.
Homar said that in 2015, Palma will be hosting seven new events and all of these competitions will be promoted at major sporting events across Europe, in particular the up coming city marathons.
