Calvia—The annual New Year´s Day swim in Portals was severely curtailed yesterday because of jellyfish.
Sarah Drane, organiser of Portals Nous annual New Year’s Day swim, the largest in southwest Majorca, said: “In the 30 plus years I’ve known Majorca, I have never seen such a concentration of jellyfish. Only a fool would allow a ‘no-wetsuit’ New Year’s Day swim to take place in these conditions so it was a rather feeble affair for 2015. A few of us walked several hundred metres to find a near-jelly-free spot, and went in for a very fast dip, but there was none of the excitement and enthusiasm of previous years. And, despite our caution and hesitance, we still ended up with two minor stings. It’s more than disappointing as the sea was far from icy, the sky bright blue, and the temperature a spring-like 17 degrees, it could have been a vintage year for the Swim.
