The fifth "Concert of the Moon in the Vineyards" will be staged next Saturday, 13 August at Bodega Macia Batle in Santa Maria del Cami. Organised by the island's Associació Amics de la Infància (association of friends of childhood), it is a benefit for the Aynewasi Homes in Peru.

Ramon Servalls, the managing director of Macia Batle, says that the spirit of this initiative is "in the DNA" of the wine producer and that it has offered it unconditional support from the outset. "It was born here as a joint idea and when you work with something charitable, it is surprising what dedication people have. It was a very big challenge. We had organised events for 70 and 80 people but never for a thousand. The Concert of the Moon in the Vineyards is one of those initiatives not to be missed. We are also fascinated by the idea of uniting wine with charity and are lucky to have so many people who participate selflessly."

Asked if he thinks that economic crisis and charity are incompatible, Servalls says no: "People are more aware of the need for charity."

As part of this year's event, Macia Batle is presenting a new wine, Sauvignon Blanc. People going to the concert can taste a whole range of red, rosé and white wines, though experience tells Macia Batle that some two-thirds of the wine consumed on the day is in fact white.

Servalls says that he hopes to one day travel to Peru to visit the Aynewasi Homes project, and it is just one of a number of causes that Macia Batle supports. Others are Zaqueo, Es Refugi and Els Caputxins through the year.

The concert is the most important in which it is involved and it brings wine and music together, this year in the form of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra together with bass-baritone Simó Orfila and Jaime Anglada and Carolina Cerezuela. Servalls concludes: "I don't think anyone could have imagined that there would be a concert of such quality at Macia Batle."

The concert starts at 21.00 on Sunday, 13 August, with doors opening half an hour before. The price is 35 euros on the night or 30 euros in advance. Bank transfer can be made for this: ES44 0487 2099 1320 0001 7125, BMN-Sa Nostra.
