The Binissalem grape battle. | P. Pellicer

They say, in Binissalem at any rate, that the grape battle during the Vermar fiestas has been copied by all other battles, including Buñol's "Tomatina" (in Valencia). This is not a claim that really stands up, but as far as battles in Majorca are concerned, it does. They've had a grape battle for 27 years: longer, for example, than the Vilafranca melon fight.

And so this afternoon, around 1,000 people took part in the battle. Some 9,000 kilos of grapes were involved. Everyone got very messy. It's handy that they hold it at the sports centre. There are showers there.
