The 54-year-old driver of the cement truck that collided with three cars near Alcudia on Tuesday, killing three people, appeared in court in Inca yesterday morning.

The man, originally from Chile, expressed his deep regret for what happened and was clearly very affected by events. He faces three counts of reckless homicide as well as charges of causing injury. One of those injured, a German girl, remains in a critical condition at Son Espases.

The judge agreed to release him with charges. He has handed in his passport and driving licence.

Alcohol and drugs tests proved negative, and he has also handed over his mobile phone. It will be studied to see if it was being used at the time. It would seem that the driver was distracted in some way or may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
