The MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) industry has been holding its own conference. On Wednesday and Thursday, Palma's Palacio de Congresos played host to "Mallorca Destino MICE". The main purpose of the conference was to map out the future for the sector and the positioning of Majorca as a leading destination for this form of business tourism.

The president of Spain's association of congress organisers, Matilde Almandoz, was positive about the future. "Majorca has all the ingredients to become a leading MICE destination for the European market. The demand is latent and the image of the island will be a positive influence in creating a leading position, despite the great competition that there is."

Almandoz stressed the part that the Palacio de Congresos will play. The Palacio is vital, she observed, because a conference destination needs everything, and Palma until now has had latent demand at an international level. "There's promotional work to do in gaining the largest possible market share in the short and medium term."

The Palacio, she felt, meets all the requirements for the sector. "Its location is good, as is its versatility and proximity to the airport."
